Biography

Luca Giovannini (2000) was born in Rovigo into a family of musicians. He studied cello with Luca Simoncini at the Conservatory in his hometown of Rovigo Graduated in 2017 with 10 honors and mention. He began his studies at the Kronberg Academy in October 2019 with Frans Helmerson. These studies are funded by the Angela Winkler Scholarship. Luca participated in the Classe d'Excellence de Violoncelle with G. Capuçon and in various Masterclasses with professors I. Monighetti, D. Geringas, L. Harrel, E. Dindo, G. Gnocchi, M. Roussi, N. Gutman, M. Maisky, G. Sollima, D. Hope, G. Kremer, A. Schiff, A.Tamestit, C. Tetzlaff provided him with further experience and inspiration.

Since 2011 Luca has played his way to victory in many national and international competitions, including winning first prize in the International Johannes Brahms Competition, the Grand Prize Virtuoso in Salzburg, the Rising Stars Grand Prix in Berlin, Crescendo International Music Competition in Florence, T.I.M. Paris, “Maura Giorgetti” organized by the Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, and has been absolute winner of the international contest Monterosa-Kawai in Varallo Sesia the second prize Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition in Croatia, and third prize in the Alice & Eleonora Schoenfeld International String Competition in Harbin, he was also selected at Seiji Ozawa International Academy. He has performed in many venues, among them the Berliner Philharmonie, Salzburg’s Mozarteum, Harbin Opera House (China), Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya, Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence, Sala Maffeiana in Verona, “La Rotonda” church in Rovigo, the Sale Apollinee of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Hall Brahms Musikverein Vienna, Suntory Hall di Tokyo. Luca has also played for the italian TV. In February 2021 he recorded his first CD Brahms' integral sonatas pianist Leonora Armellini for the label Velut Luna. Luca plays a cello by Ansaldo Poggi dating from 1927, which is loaned to him by Mario Brunello.
