Biography
Michelle Stern, an 18-year-old “violinist on the rise to stardom” (QNS), is critically acclaimed and internationally recognized for her one-of-a-kind, exuberant artistry, and masterful technique. She was a 2021 Starling Delay Symposium student artist, and was recently featured on NPR’s From the Top Episode 389, where she performed solo and as a chamber musician alongside distinguished pianist and show-host Orli Shaham. She is currently a freshman at Harvard University, and is a graduate of Juilliard’s Pre-College Program where she studied under Professor Ann Setzer for seven years. An active performer, Michelle gives frequent recitals both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and has held a concertmaster position in all three of the Juilliard Pre-College orchestras on several occasions, where she worked with conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Simon Rattle, David Robertson, and Adam Glaser. She was featured in masterclasses with James Ehnes, Anne Akiko Meyers, Josef Špaček, and Francesca dePasquale. She earned first and/or grand prizes in the Camerata Artists International Competition 2021, the Rudolf Barshai International Competition 2021, the National League of the Performing Arts’ International Young Artists Competition 2021 (as well as the NLPA 2021 scholarship award), the Young Artists Category of the Gershwin International Music Competition 2017, Namei International Music Competition, Concert Festival International Competition, New York Music Competition, Jewish Kids Got Talent, American Protégé International Competition, Chamber Music Society’s Young Musicians program, etc., and has soloed with orchestras throughout the United States. As the special prize winner of the Rudolf Barshai International Competition 2021, Michelle will be making her international debut as a featured soloist with the renowned Israel Chamber Orchestra in the upcoming season. Michelle attended and performed at the Meadowmount School of Music, the Oyster Bay Music Festival, and Barge Music’s Here and Now Series, and participated in the Starling Delay Symposium 2019, American Protégé’s Gala at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, the Little Orchestra Society, Mostly Mozart 2020, and the Connectd Project. She was featured on PBS’s Artscene and NPR’s “Seldom Said,” and has received several City Council Citations for her community service, academic achievements, and musical recognition.
