Biography

Educational Background

Wang Xinghao learned violin from violin educationist Shao Guanglu since he was five, and learned from famous Chinese violin educationist and player Professor Yu Lina since he was eight. From 1997 to 2006, he studied at Primary School and Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music. During his school days, he learned from several teachers, including Zhao Jiyang, Zhu Qinglin, Zhou Binyou, Huang Chenxing and former concertmaster of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Wang Xili. In 2006, he was admitted to the postgraduate program of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with excellent grades, and learned from Professor Yu Lina till he graduated in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree.

In October 2010, he went to Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, learning from Christoph Shickedanz, Tanja Beckerbender and former concertmaster of Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Andreas Röhn. He was praised by the president of the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre Elmar Lampson as a “violinist with special talent”. Then, he graduated with distinction and obtained a master’s degree of this university. Since September 2012, he served as graduate assistant at the Montclair State University, New Jersey, learned chamber music performance from the prominent “Shanghai Quartet”, and obtained the Artist Diploma. In 2014, he received offers from the Manhattan School of Music and the Mannes School of Music simultaneously. Later, with a full scholarship, he pursued advanced studies at the Shepherd School of Music of Rice University, Texas, US, under the tutorship of famous Chinese American violinist Cho-liang Lin.

Wang Xinghao has attended many international music festivals, such as “Perlman Music Festival”, French “Casals Music Festival”, “Music ALP”, Italy’s “Amici della Musica Firenze”, and German’s “Internationale Sommerakademie Lüneburger Heide”. He received instructions from a number of musicians, including Itzak Perlman, Pinchas Zuckermann, Donald Weilerstein, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Glenn Dicterow, Charles Avsharian, former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Kolja Blacher, Mikhail Kopelman, Gérard Poulet, Stephan Picard, Ning Feng, and ‘Shanghai Quartet’, ‘Borodin Quartet’, ‘Talich Quartet’ and ‘Fine Arts Quaertet’ in chamber music, as well as current concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Noah Bendix Bargley, and won the Outstanding Student Award in “Canada Mount Royal Music Bridge”.

Performing Experience

In 2007, Wang Xinghao, on the behalf of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, was touring with the National Youth Orchestra of Germany in Kassel, Hamburg, Berlin Großer Saal under the leadership of grandmaster Tang Muhai both inside and outside of the country. In 2008, he won third place in “Chamber Music Competition of Shanghai Conservatory of Music” and acted as the concertmaster of “the Youth Orchestra of Shanghai Conservatory of Music”. He once took part in many performances, such as the art program “Lady White Snake” initiated by the Shanghai Jingju Theatre and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Symphony Orchestra, “Shanghai International Music Festival”, the opening ceremony of “Jinzhong Competition” and other major music programs. He won “Concertmaster Scholarship of Shanghai Conservatory of Music” and “Shanghai People’s Scholarship”. In 2010, he performed as the deputy concertmaster with conductor Roger Norrington and Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. In the same year, he performed with Italian Milan opera “Teatro alla Scala” and pianist Wang Yujia at the Shanghai World Expo.

When in Germany, Wang Xinghao won the position of violin player in the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. He performed with an orchestra in the Elbphilharmonie, and performed in a public concert and German live music program “NDR”, “Festival of Contemporary Art Music” and other shows as a soloist and chamber music player. Moreover, he once acted as violin scorer in German movie Der Mahler. In the United States, as the concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Montclair State University Symphony Orchestra, his performances in monthly concert and chamber music concert held in New Jersey and Carnegie Hall (New York City) were all well-received.

In recent years, Wang Xinghao has collaborated with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Opera House, Shanghai Sinofnietta, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras for many times. He has also collaborated with numerous world-class artists at home and abroad, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Yu Long, Chen Xieyang, Tang Muhai, Zhang Guoyong, Xu Zhong, Robert Abbado, Daniel Oren, Christian Arming, Eschenbach, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Tan Dun, Li Yundi, Wang Jian, Liu Shikun, Sheng Zongliang, He Hui, Yang Guang, Xavier Merset, Lv Siqing, Ning Feng, Qin Liwei and Yang Xuefei. He performed in many famous venues, including National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay (Singapore), National Theatre and Concert Hall (Taipei), Suntory Hall (Tokyo), and Kobe International Exhibition Hall. On February 8, 2019, at the invitation of the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, he performed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Recently, Wang was invited to “the Opening Ceremony of the Cadillac Shanghai Concert Hall” as a soloist and chamber music player, successfully held multiple concerts at Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Jinji Lake Concert Hall (Suzhou), Hubei Theatre (Wuhan), Chengdu Telunsu Concert Hall and Xiamen Music Hall, and became a special chamber music performer invited to the ‘Rivers Awards’ held by the Composition Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2019.

Teaching experience

Wang Xinghao formerly served as professional lecturer at preparatory violin class at private music school Caldrone School of Music in New Jersey, the United States, helping students who aspire to start a professional career as a violinist with the skills and discipline. He was invited to hold ‘Sino-Canada Classical Music Lecture’ at Sino-Canada International School, Suzhou, and took part in music popularization and education among designated elementary and secondary schools in Suzhou. In 2019, he acted as violin part director for the Art Class of Suzhou Jinji Lake School, and this class won first prize at the 6 th National Primary and Middle School Art Show. Besides, he took part in the joint performance of the band of the Asia Dulwich International School (invited by Suzhou Dulwich) as a performance director and the joint performance of the band of the YK Pao School in Shanghai as a special performance director. Furthermore, students he had instructed have won gold, silver and other awards at Shanghai’s municipal and district-level youth competitions and international children’s music competitions.
