Biography

Gabriel Oliveira was born in Itabira, Minas Gerais, in 1996. At the age of 12, he began his piano lessons with Yvone Ayres. He then transferred his studies to Belo Horizonte, where he worked under the supervision of Celina Szrvinsk for two years. In 2014, he entered the Bachelor of Music degree programme at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), which was concluded in 2019. He took master classes with renowned piano teachers such as Bruno Canino, Boris Berman, Josep Colom, Paul Stewart, Alexander Yakovlev, Alexandre Dossin, Berenice Menegale, Cristina Capparelli, Eduardo Monteiro, Cristian Budu, Kyoko Hashimoto, Mirta Herrera, Luiz Senise and Paulo Álvares. He also attended the Divinópolis Music Festival, in 2012, and all editions of Festival de Maio, from 2013 to 2018, as well as the Pelotas Music Festival and the Portuguese International Piano Week of Óbidos, both in 2019. With a distinguished career, he was awarded the first prize in several piano competitions in Brazil. In 2019, he won the Joungs Solists contest of the UFMG Music School. During the year of 2017, he won the 1st Escola de Música Villa-Lobos Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro, the Casa da Música Piano Competition in Porto Alegre and Profª. Edna Basetti Habbith Piano Competition in Curitiba. Furthermore, in 2016, he won the 25th Souza Lima National Piano Competition in São Paulo, the 14th Cora Pavan Capparelli National Piano Competition in Uberlândia, and the 23rd "Professor Abrão Calil Neto" National Piano Competition in Ituiutaba. In this same year, he was chosen as the representative of the UFMG Bachelor of Music degree programme to play in the ceremony of conferment of the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to the celebrated pianist Nelson Freire by the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He has played to warm critical acclaim in some of Brazil’s most reputable concert halls such as Sérgio Magnani Hall and UFMG Conservatory, in Belo Horizonte, MuBe Auditorium, in São Paulo, Cecilia Meireles Hall in Rio de Janeiro, and others. Since 2014, Gabriel Oliveira has been taking lesson with Miguel Rosselini.
