Biography
Florian Schäfer was born in 1995 in Hamburg/Germany. He grew up in a family of musicians, his father holds the position of the solo-bassist and his mother is part of the first violin group of the „Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg". Schäfers sister plays the viola und studies at the Musikhochschule Lübeck.
Schäfer received his first double-bass lessons from his father. During his time in school he was part of the school orchestra as well as the Big Band and won several prizes at the competition „Jugend Musiziert“.
After his graduation he first took up studies in musicology and music schoolteaching - the double-bass had already the biggest impact on him and interested him the most at the time. So he decided to fully engage in the double-bass studies. Since 2018 he is studying double-bass in the class of Prof. Matthias Weber at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart.
Schäfer gained experience in orchestra playing as trainee of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart during the season 2019/2020. Apart from that he played in the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester, Hochschulorchester der Musikhochschule Stuttgart as principal bassist or the Orchester St. Michaelis Hamburg for instance.
Additionally Schäfer was fortunate enough to get musical input on masterclasses by several well-known teachers like Thierry Barbe, Edicson Ruiz, Szymon Marciniak or Dorin Marc for example.
Furthermore he participated in the Kontrabass-Kaleidoskop Kloster Michaelstein in 2016 and 2019, where he was able to play with the Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Wernigerode as a soloist.
Schäfer also attended various double-bass conventions and workshops from the Landesmusikakademien Bayern, Baden-Württemberg and Brandenburg. In addition Florian Schäfer is very much interested in playing chamber music and has participated in various chamber music ensembles, being taught by professors like Martin Funda or Matthias Weber. He also took part at the „Kammermusikkurs für junge Instrumentalisten“ by Jeunesses Musicales in Weikersheim in 2015.
