Biography
Oleksandr Mykhailov was born in Odessa (Ukraine) in 1994. In the age of 6 he entered the Professor Stolyarsky Special Music School of Odessa specializing in violoncello and in the end of the first year of his studies he took the 1st prize on an international contest. Since then he often appeared on different stages as a soloist, participant of various ensembles and of an orchestra. When he graduated from the Professor Stolyarsky Special Music School of Odessa in 2011, class of V.V. Balon-Rymashevska, he entered Bern University of the Arts (HKB) (D. Severin, K. Brotbek) and when gained his Bachelor’s degree, he entered Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in 2015 with the highest points according to the program of Master Performance, class of Orfeo Mendozzi. In 2017, he received a Master Performance diploma and continued his studies at ZHdK under the Master Pädagogik program. In 2021 he completed his studies and got a Master Pädagogik diploma.
Oleksandr Mykhailov is a prize-winner of various international contests and festivals («The Art of the XXI Century», «The Chords of Khortytsia», «Music is Our Common Home», «The Contest of Cellists», «V. Balon-Rymashevska International Festival of Cello Art» held in Ukraine; «The Blue Bird» held in Crimea; «The Nutcracker», «Moscow Welcomes Friends» held in Russia; festivals in Germany (Görlitz), France (Paris) and Poland (Wrocław). In July 2016 he won I place at the international string competition in Cremona, Italy and II place at the "Golden Keys Competition" in Switzerland. Many times he played with orchestra as a soloist in Odessa, Zaporozhye, Kharkov, Zurich, Cremona with such conductors as V. Pedya, S. Patlajan, V.Moldovanov, A.Cherny, H. Earle etc. He also took part in many concerts as a soloist, and as a member of an orchestra with an conductors as: Bernard Haitink, Larry Rachleff, Christian Zacharias, and jazz performer in ensembles. Since 2006 he has taken part in the programs of V. Spivakov Charity Foundation.
Concert season 2016/17 he has been a Development Intern in Bern Symphonic Orchestra.
Since January 2021 - artist of the orchestra of the Odessa State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater
He attended the master classes of Alexander Kaganovsky (Switzerland), Igor Gavrish (Russia), Conradin Brotbek (Switzerland) and Asa Akerberg (Switzerland).
He is able to handle Baroque cello, Viola da Gamba and has extensive experience in performing baroque music, both on baroque and modern instruments. Alexander Mikhailov also attended conducting courses.
His repertoire includes works of different styles and genres.
