Biography

Miles began playing the cello when he was 4 years old. At 19 years of age, Miles completed his Bachelor of Music Performance with First Class Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, having studied under Julian Smiles. Miles has also been taught by Fred Sherry, Tamas Varga, Timothy Walden, Hannu Kiiski, and Howard Penny, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Phillip Muller, Daniel Müller-Schott, Umberto Clerici, and Kasia Hans, whom he continues to study with.

Miles took part in the Estivo Chamber Music Summer School in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, Miles received both 1st and 2nd prizes at the inaugural Sydney Conservatorium Association Chamber Music Competition. Miles was a member of the Pietra String Quartet, who was awarded the Westheimer String Quartet Fellowship and received support from the Ernest V. Llewellyn Memorial Fund to travel overseas in pursuit of chamber music tuition. Using these prizes and funds they were able to travel and study with Eberhard Feltz, Johannes Meissl, Thomas Riebl, William Coleman, Edward Dusinberre, Hélène Clément, and Jonathan Stone.

Miles was the recipient of the 1st prize at the Gisborne International Music Competition in 2019.

Miles is a regular soloist and chamber musician at the Canberra International Music Festival. He has also performed in the Sydney Festival, Four Winds Festival, and the Musica Viva Festival. 

Miles has performed as a casual cellist with Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and was the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellow for 2020 and 2021.
