Biography

Varinia Oyola Rebaza is a versatile violist and celebrated chamber musician born in Lima, Peru. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Royal Academy of Music in London, she has performed in renowned venues such as Conway Hall, St. john’s Smith Square, Alice Tully Hall, Auditorio de la Diputacion in Spain, Auditorio Santa Ursula in Peru, and St. Margaret's Church at Westminster Abbey. Her awards include the Jerome L. Greene Fellowship at Juilliard, the First Prize and Audience Prize at the 2018 International Chamber Music Competition Massimo Antonelli, as a member of the Alauda Quartet, in addition, in May 2019, she was honoured as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), an accolade for selected Academy graduates for their contributions to the music field.

She performs in recital with Hungarian pianist Mihály Berecz, is co-director of the ensemble Platform Music, alongside violinist Luke Hsu and cellist Sarah Gait, and is the new viola fellow at Southbank Sinfonia for their 2021 season. Her interest in working with living composers has led to collaborations with composer Andrew Norman, performing his solo viola work at Royal Academy of Music’s Duke’s Hall, and with the renowned violist and composer Garth Knox.

She has been invited to festivals such as Jeunesses Musicales International Chamber Music Campus, Schloss Akademie, Snape Maltings Chamber Music Residency, Great Mountains in South Korea, Orford Academy in Canada and the Barenboim-Said Akademie Masterclasses with Yuri Bashmet in Berlin. Her principal teachers are Heidi Castleman, Steven Tenenbom, Christine Rutledge, David Holland, and Garfield Jackson.

Varinia plays on a viola by Bernard Fendt (c.1840) generously on loan from the Royal Academy of Music Museum Collection.
